bairns in the wood: illustrated summary
The opening scene starts with Flora, the owner of Ye Olde Chippe Shoppe. She introduces herself to the audience and makes a few jokes. Then Bert and his brother Shuggie enter the stage. They're in a difficult situation because they need to find a job very quickly, otherwise they "will be locked up".

Flora, Bert and Shuggie sing a song.

Then the conversation resumes. Flora offers Bert and Shuggie some chips, and whilst eating Bert comes across an interesting advert in the newspaper : "Wanted : 2 able-bodied, bright, generally brilliant men to work for the Sheriff. Apply direct"

The Sheriff arrives, and says unpleasant things to the villagers. Bert tells him that he and Shuggie are interested in the job he advertized. The Sheriff decides to test them and finally gives them the job. "Your job will be to capture that villain, Robbie Hood and his band of outlaws" "Robbie Hood ? But all the villagers like him !" "Do you want the job or not ?!" "Sheriff, he's as good as captured"

A messenger brings a message from the King to the Sheriff : "Let it be known that I, the King do hereby entrust the lives of my two children to the Sheriff whilst I travel abroad on the crusades. Let no harm befall them, or the doer shall know the consequences."

"So the King's children are in my care and he's out of the country... Very interesting" the Sheriff says to himself...

Some time later the Sheriff is alone with Bert and Shuggie and reveals his real intentions : he wants them to kill the King's children. "With them out of the way and the King abroad I shall rule the country, ha ha ha ha ha"

"Kill the kids ? Oh we couldn't do that"

"Well you have a choice : kill them or have your heads chopped off"

Bert and Shuggie kidnap the kids, but can't bring themselves to kill them. They decide that the best thing to do is to leave the kids in the forest.

-------------------------------------------

Bert and Shuggie are now in big trouble since they didn't fulfill the mission assigned to them by the Sheriff. They hide in the forest in disguise as bushes...

Suddenly, Flora and the old woman come along. Bert and Shuggie try to pretend they're bushes, unfortunately Shuggie spoils it all by saying "I'm a bush" when Flora approaches him. Bert tells him off : "You idiot ! You've spoilt the disguise now, bushes don't talk !"

But it's too late...

Flora is furious because she believes they killed the kids and she starts running after them. But they soon tell her that they spared the kids' lives and she calms down.

Flora, Bert, Shuggie and the old woman sing a song.

Time has passed, and the Sheriff makes a public appearance. He believes the kids are dead, and just as he's about to pronounce himself King some latecomers arrive : first Flora and the old woman, then Robbie Hood and finally the kids themselves ! The King says :"I am so relieved, I was beginning to think I'd never see you again" and is of course booed by the audience. In a desperate attempt to reverse the situation he tries to cut the kids' throats but the King arrives and takes them away.

The Sheriff is pilloried and Bert and Shuggie smash cream pies in his face.

Shuggie is so happy that he starts to sing completely out of tune and everybody puts their fingers in their ears.
