About Hans Christian Andersen
Hans Christian Andersen (1805–1875) was born in Odense, Denmark, the son of a poor shoemaker. Despite his humble origins, he became one of the most widely translated authors in history, celebrated for a body of fairy tales that combine folk tradition with deeply personal imagination. His stories — by turns comic, melancholy, fantastical, and profound — have shaped children's literature across the world for nearly two centuries.
