Early Years

Theatrical training and professional beginnings

1977

13 August 1977: Euan Douglas George Morton is born as Iain Middleton in Falkirk, Scotland.

1990s

Childhood: Morton becomes a member of Falkirk Children's Theatre, developing his early acting skills.

Secondary school: Morton attends Bo'ness Academy, where he meets drama teacher Mhairi Gilchrist, who makes a major contribution to his development. He participates in various school performances, including starring in West Side Story.


1994

Age 17: Morton leaves home to attend Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in north London.


1997

Morton graduates from Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts after following a 3-year acting course.

11 August – 30 August: Morton appears in Approaching Zanzibar at Southwark Playhouse, London.


1998

3 February – 1 March: Morton appears in An Empty Plate In The Café du Grand Bœuf at New End Theatre, London.

19 May – 7 June: Morton appears in The Sexual Life Of The Camel at Man in the Moon Theatre, London.

1999

29 January: Taboo premieres in London's West End at the Venue Theatre. Morton originates the role of Boy George.

7 July: Morton performs "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?" at the Royal Albert Hall.

31 December: Morton performs at Edinburgh's Hogmanay, singing "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?".


2003

26 April: London production of Taboo plays its final performance after over a year run.

7 September: Morton performs "Stranger In This World" from Taboo at Broadway on Broadway.

28 October: Broadway previews of Taboo begin at the Plymouth Theatre.

13 November: Taboo officially opens on Broadway. Morton reprises his role as Boy George, moving to America for the first time.

Morton receives nominations for the Whatsonstage Awards and Laurence Olivier Awards for his London performance as Boy George.


2004

8 February: Taboo closes on Broadway after 100 performances.

Morton receives Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, and Drama League Award nominations for Taboo.

Morton wins Theatre World Award 🏆for Outstanding Debut Performer on Broadway.

14 September – 9 October: Morton plays the title role in Caligula: An Ancient Glam Epic at the inaugural New York Musical Theatre Festival at The Theatre at St. Clement's, winning the NYMF Award 🏆 for Outstanding Individual Performance and the Golden NYMFette award for Best Musical of the Festival.

20 September: Morton performs "Manchester, England" from Hair at Hair benefit concert.
