Minecraft: The Voyage audiobook by Jason Fry
Narrated by Euan Morton (2020)
Stax Stonecutter has grown up in his parents' estate by the sea in the Overworld, tending his garden and caring for his three cats, unbothered by the wider world. His quiet life is shattered when a band of raiders arrives, destroys everything he has, and strands him far from home with nothing. Forced to survive on his own for the first time, he gradually encounters a community of travelers who show him that the Overworld beyond his former boundaries holds as much wonder as danger.
Minecraft: The Voyage is the fifth novel in the Official Minecraft Novels series, published by Del Rey Books on May 5, 2020.
About the Official Minecraft Novels series
Launched in 2017 by Del Rey Books (an imprint of Penguin Random House), the Official Minecraft Novels series brings together different authors for standalone novels set in the world of Minecraft. Each book features a self-contained story with original characters, exploring different aspects of the Overworld and beyond. The Voyage is the fifth installment:
- Minecraft: The Island by Max Brooks (2017)
- Minecraft: The Crash by Tracey Baptiste (2018)
- Minecraft: The Lost Journals by Mur Lafferty (2019)
- Minecraft: The End by Catherynne M. Valente (2019)
- Minecraft: The Voyage by Jason Fry (2020)
The narration
Euan Morton narrates the full audiobook as solo narrator across nearly nine hours. The novel spans a large and varied cast — the reclusive Stax, the raiders who dispossess him, and the disparate community of travelers he meets along the way — requiring Morton to differentiate voices ranging from antagonists to unlikely allies while keeping the tone accessible to the book's target audience of middle-grade readers. The assignment calls for consistent energy and pacing over an extended running time, sustaining a protagonist's journey from passivity to agency without tipping into theatrical excess.
