It is 1843, and Charles Dickens is not feeling the Christmas spirit. His latest novel has been a critical and commercial disappointment, his publishers are threatening to call in his debts, and his growing family is counting on him. Frazzled and plagued by writer's block, Dickens retreats to the fog-bound streets of London for his customary long night walks. In a once-beloved square, he encounters the mysterious Eleanor Lovejoy, who becomes the muse he never expected. As his deadlines close in, she propels him on a Scrooge-like journey through generosity, friendship, ambition, and love—and the story he finally writes will change Christmas forever.

Mr. Dickens and His Carol is Samantha Silva's debut novel. The New York Times Book Review selected it as an Indie Next Pick, and it has been praised by Anthony Doerr, Jess Walter, and Jay Parini.

Audiobook review

"From his first words to his last, Euan Morton's narration is quintessentially Dickensian. This novel gives Morton the opportunity to voice all the personalities of the original Christmas Carol—from revelers to Scrooge, ghosts, and Tiny Tim—and all are satisfying portrayals. Since Dickens plays the Scrooge in Silva's story, listeners must wait until the end for his redemption. Morton makes it a fun and atmospheric wait, capped off by a perfect recitation of Tiny Tim's (and Dickens's) most iconic line."
AudioFile Magazine (audiobook review, December 2017)
"[Narrator Euan Morton's] British-accented narration is pure delight… This imaginative story is so charming that listeners will be convinced it is fact, not fiction. A heartwarming addition to the holiday audiobook collection."

Critical praise for the book

"A charming, comic, and ultimately poignant story about the creation of the most famous Christmas tale ever written. It’s as foggy and haunted and redemptive as the original; it’s all heart."
Anthony Doerr, New York Times bestselling author of All the Light We Cannot See
"A novel of pure charm and humor, a terrific holiday tale. Samantha Silva had me haunting those dark streets alongside her inspired Dickens."
Jess Walter, New York Times bestselling author of Beautiful Ruins
"This clever, original debut brilliantly imagines the writing of A Christmas Carol… Wildly moving, chock full of Dickensian atmosphere and written in a style as rich as a Victorian Christmas dinner."
