In 1986, Eddie and his friends are on the verge of adolescence, spending their days biking around their quiet English village of Anderbury. The chalk men are their secret code—stick figures they draw for one another as hidden messages. But one morning the friends follow a chalk man into the woods, only to find the dead body of a teenage girl. In 2016, Eddie is nursing a drinking problem and trying to forget the past, until a letter arrives containing a single chalk figure. When he learns that all his old friends received the same note—and one of them turns up dead—Eddie realizes that saving himself means uncovering what really happened all those years ago.

The Chalk Man won the ITW Thriller Award for Best First Novel, the Strand Magazine Award for Best Debut Novel, and the Barry Award. It is C.J. Tudor's debut novel.

Audiobook review

AudioFile Magazine reviewed Euan Morton's narration:

"Euan Morton deftly narrates this psychological thriller as it shifts back and forth in time. [...] Morton portrays young Eddie with soft vulnerability and a measured cadence; in contrast, his adult Eddie carries the weight of years in a hardened, sardonic voice as an old friend stirs up the past. Morton's skill lets the listener know where the story is at all times. His performance grounds the disjointed plot and captures the pathos of Eddie's search for answers in his murky past."

"Want to read something good? You won't find it on the front bestseller table at your bookstore, but it's new, and will be there. THE CHALK MAN, by C.J. Tudor. If you like my stuff, you'll like this."

Critical praise for the book

"A swift, cleverly plotted debut novel that ably captures the insular, slightly sinister feel of a small village. Children of the 1980s will enjoy the nostalgia."
"A promising debut… with the nightmarish inevitability of the Grimmest of tales… her storytelling prowess is undeniable."
"An assured debut that alternates between 1986 and 2016 with unpredictable twists. The Chalk Man fits well with other stories about troubled childhoods such as Stephen King's novella Stand by Me. Tudor never misses a beat in showing each character as both a child and an adult while also exploring the foreboding environs of a small town."
