Originally published in Spanish as El ojo de Goliat (2022), The Eye of Goliath is Diego Muzzio’s English-language debut, translated by Rahul Bery. In 1920s Edinburgh, war veteran Dr Edward Pierce develops experimental therapies for patients whose cases have been rejected by conventional psychiatry. When he takes on David Bradley — an engineer who returned mute and half-drowned from a lighthouse posting on a remote island off southern Argentina — Bradley’s fragmentary diary draws Pierce into scientific terrain that grows steadily more grotesque, in a novel that reworks the doubling at the heart of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

About the novel
In an old sanatorium on the outskirts of Edinburgh, Dr Edward Pierce treats patients traumatised by the First World War with experimental therapies conventional psychiatry has rejected. Late one night he receives a visitor asking him to take on a bizarre new case: David Bradley, an engineer sent to inspect a lighthouse on a desolate island in southern Argentina. Once rational and disciplined, Bradley returned from the assignment completely mute, his body overtaken by a single compulsion — to swim, in any environment, to the point of total exhaustion.
As Pierce becomes fixated on Bradley’s diary — a fragmentary, increasingly deranged record of what happened on the island — the novel builds an ingenious structure of doubling and uncertainty, and the line between doctor and patient begins dangerously to blur. Diego Muzzio unites classic gothic atmosphere with disturbingly modern psychological horror, drawing explicitly on Robert Louis Stevenson and Edgar Allan Poe.

About Diego Muzzio
Diego Muzzio was born in Buenos Aires in 1969 and has lived in France since the early 2000s. He studied Literature at the University of Buenos Aires. He now teaches Spanish at Le Mans Université and lives in Le Mans. Before turning to fiction, he was already an established poet and children’s author, and his work has won the Premio Hispanoamericano de Poesía Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. The Spanish-language manuscript of The Eye of Goliath won the fourth Premio Fundación Medifé Filba in 2023, an award for emerging Latin American literature; it is his first novel.
